PLATYSMA MUSCLES – muscles of youth

Our platysma muscles are responsible for how youthful we look. Weak platysma muscles contribute to jowls, saggy Pitbull cheeks, double chins, turkey neck and a creepy décolleté.

Platysma is the biggest of the mimic muscles. It begins at the chest and rises all the way up to the frontal neck and cheeks. It also connects to the chewing muscles and the muscles at the side of the mouth Attaching to the lower jaw and the ears.

A healthy and strong platysma holds the beauty and youthfulness of the lower face, neck and the upper chest. The muscles that are so important for us to look beautiful are also the most vulnerable because it is thin and is directly under the skin. It also does not connect to any bones so it very quickly and earlier on loses its elasticity. So once the platysma muscles get out of shape we start to look aged.

If the platysma and the neck muscles are tight and stressed the skin inevitably starts to sag. Tension of the neck causes traction resulting in early wrinkles on the neck gradually creeping up to sag the cheeks and the mouth. Even the chest is lowered.

How? We cannot really do exercises to pump the muscles as it can make it worse especially if there are already age related changes. We can start by strengthening the neck, the spine and the upper arms. Relieving tension and strengthening the neck and the superficial fasciae of the neck and shoulders to make the skin tighter and wrinkles go away resulting in a more sculpted jaw and Chin.
